About PL

Hey! Paper Leaf is an award-winning digital product design firm located in Edmonton, AB. We design & develop innovative custom web applications, mobile applications and websites – and we are looking to add a full time UX/UI Designer. We have a fun, relaxed & flexible environment that’s actually organized; a tight-knit team where your voice is heard; a variety of challenging, rewarding, and creative work; and a clear framework for professional development and growth. It’s a good place to be.

We work on projects for clients across the globe, and you’ll be working on a team that values high-quality execution – not one that is hellbent on burning you out and churning out as much work as possible. You can learn more about our work on the Portfolio page, and about our team on our About page.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility
We believe that diversity in all regards contributes to a broader collective perspective that will consistently improve Paper Leaf and the work we do. We are working hard to increase the diversity of our team wherever we can and we actively encourage everyone to consider becoming a part of it. We have strong staff involvement in our DEI initiatives, establishing and advocating for progression of Paper Leaf’s processes. These efforts span from establishing equitable hiring practices to ensuring the products we deliver are setting standards for accessibility in our industry.

If you require accommodation measures during any phase of the hiring process, please notify us as soon as possible. All information received in relation to accommodation requests will be kept confidential.

Position Overview
The UX/UI Designer position is mainly responsible for the design strategy and execution of web & mobile projects (mobile apps, web apps and websites). This includes wireframing; prototyping; workflow mapping; visual design; design systems; client communication; user testing; and more. Designers on our teams are involved early on, and throughout the entire process of a project. They frequently need to touch base with: the Design Director on their priorities and growth; the Design Lead to ensure that project quality is maintained; their Project Manager to stay on schedule & on budget; and the project Developers for iterative collaboration to ensure decisions made at the creative level aren’t negatively impacting Development’s role in the project.

Ideal Candidate:

Are you the ideal candidate for this position? You are if you…

  • Align with each one of our core values:
    • Get it done.
    • Ask why and stay curious.
    • Create together.
    • Care deeply.
    • Say the right thing, even when it’s hard.
  • Get as much satisfaction out of unpacking a complex problem as you do visual design.
  • Care about the user experience (empathy FTW!) and can work to balance both user and client needs in your solutions.
  • Have an incredible attention to detail – you notice when a form field is misaligned by 2 pixels and it drives you bananas.
  • Work well in a team and can communicate and collaborate with various types of roles and people.
  • Have a strong sense of personal responsibility, accountability & organization.
  • Are able to take a due date and work backwards to create an actionable plan to achieve it.
  • Are willing to jump in and help others.
  • Aren’t afraid to ask questions.

Responsibilities:

As a UX/UI designer you will be expected to:

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with content strategists, developers, project managers and clients.
  • Create user flows, wireframe and prototypes.
  • Develop application interface designs for various clients (we work in Figma!) – layout, styling, file preparation for responsive web apps and websites.
  • Ensure design solutions are within project scope.
  • Participate in user testing, user interviews and other quantitative and qualitative UX research.
  • Identify user needs and define acceptance criteria.
  • Participate in and present at client meetings.
  • Track time (it sucks, but it’s necessary).

Requirements:

  • 2-3 years UX/UI design experience, in an agency setting preferably.
  • Post-secondary education in design.
  • Experience using Figma.
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Fonts).
  • A digital portfolio showcasing your UX/UI design work for websites, web apps, and/or mobile apps. If you have live products or prototypes, we’d love to explore them—send us the links!

What We Offer

Ramp Up Plan

1 Month:

  • You’ll spend the first couple of weeks onboarding and settling in. You’ll meet your team, gain an understanding of the company culture and processes, and explore your toolset.
  • You’ll collaborate with your manager to get oriented with PL’s project lifecycle and the role designers play within it.
  • You’ll shadow Jenelle, an on-team UX/UI designer, to learn about her workflow and the types of projects currently underway that you will be taking over.
  • With support from your manager and our Design Lead, Sara, you’ll begin contributing to your first billable project.

3 Months:

  • By now, you’ll likely be working on 1-2 website build projects with some support, handling key UX/UI design tasks like creating user flows, wireframes, and UI screens.
  • You’ll work closely with your team—planning projects with PMs, defining IA and structure with content strategists, and collaborating with developers to bring your designs to life. You’ll also QA completed work to ensure it stays true to your strategy and designs.
  • You’ll take advantage of professional development time to address any gaps in your knowledge or skills, ensuring you’re fully set up for success in your upcoming projects.

4-6 Months:

  • Take on your first solo project, applying everything you’ve learned so far.

If you don’t meet one or two of these requirements, but still feel you’d be a good fit, throw your hat in the mix anyway. You miss every shot you don’t take!
